About Dr. Char

I was diagnosed with diabetes almost 50 years ago and I had no continuous glucose monitoring device. I literally peed on a stick. While it’s a fun part of my story now, it wasn’t so fun back then. I was a sixteen year old living in another country away from my parents for the very first time and it seemed everything changed that day. I was always thirsty and tired. But once I knew what was wrong, I couldn’t comprehend how I was going to do all I was expected to do and monitor every bite that went into my mouth for the rest of my life. After I realized this problem was affecting every facet of my life, I went back to school. For twenty years, sometimes one class at a time, I completed my education. By then, I had decided I want to help others…as well as myself.

I studied to be a mental health professional and I’ve learned that everything doesn’t need managed. Some things need reversed. So, I’m taking my many years of experience as a counselor helping people on a one-on-one basis, sharing my knowledge and training to – the many – in order to reduce unnecessary suffering for people dealing with anxiety.

Dr. Char is a consultant, trainer, educator, entrepreneur, interdisciplinary treatment team agent, and counseling psychology specialist with intensive professional experience. She completed an Ed D in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in supervision. Dr. Char is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a qualified supervisor in the state of Florida for interns seeking licensure.

Furthermore, she is a Licensed Professional Counselor – Mental Health Service Provider (LPC-MHSP) in the state of Tennessee and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) with the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). She has a primary certification in Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), and held Florida Department of Education certifications in Guidance & Counseling and Exceptional Student Education (ESE) for many years. This formal training and educational background has contributed to her career in both counseling and educational fields.

Now Dr. Char combines her formal training, education, and over 30 years of experience to guide her patients to truly understand the fullness of well-being, release of anxiety, and how to experience lasting joy.

My podcast, Today’s Leaders in Mental Health & Diabetes, focuses on casual conversations with Leaders in Diabetes & Mental Health. They share their journey with living well and how they help others.

Since I’ve always liked having casual conversations about the simplest of things and the deepest of matters, it has seemed to create an environment over the last 30 years for me personally and the many patients I’ve served – to discuss insurmountable problems, create a plan, scale the wall, and pull down the barriers that keeps us from joy.

Most people dealing with diabetes receive education on caring for their physical bodies. However, there is a mental well-being component that often gets overlooked and the emotional impact is not given the attention it needs. Because of this, many people dealing with diabetes are misunderstood. Their challenges are mislabeled and they suffer in silence. The expectation to make big lifestyle changes overnight and transform magically sometimes takes a toll on them and exasperates the issues.

The solution is a skill away.

I know that if you can understand how anxiety takes root when dealing with diabetes, how anxiety works, and what to do about it, you can build a skill to walk away from anxiety forever. No matter your circumstances, you can develop this skill. And that is the legacy I want to leave behind.

Life has a way of throwing us a curve-ball and sometimes catches us off guard and stresses us out. My passion was born for counseling after finding myself there. I’ve developed a method for dealing with diabetes and all the fear and anxiety it brought. The great news is anyone can learn this skill.

Since fear will attract whatever information is needed to validate the fear, I am fortunate to have chosen a career where I can help others understand thought patterns and implement a skill to walk away from fear and anxiety. The best part of the experience of counseling is watching others – not only walk away from anxiety – but better still to see them live a life full of joy.
